Known as Shikuka during the Japanese period before 1945, Poronaysk (RU PRN) sits at the mouth of the Poronai River on the south-east coast of Sakhalin. The harbour is an open roadstead whose traditional trade is the export of timber, fish and hides, with rice and salt among the inbound goods; fishing, fish processing and a paper mill anchor the local economy. A cargo pier of only about 1.8 m depth rules out deep-draught vessels, containers and large parcels, and navigation is seasonally restricted by ice. Road and rail link the town to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, some 290 km to the south. For commercial liner, container and ferry traffic, Korsakov and Kholmsk in the south of the island are the relevant ports.
