Heavy siltation defines the operating reality of Pontianak's Dwikora Harbour, sited about ten nautical miles up the Kapuas River in West Kalimantan, Borneo. Pelindo spends roughly IDR70 billion a year dredging the channel, whose depth of around 4.9 metres limits vessel size. The port handles containers, dry bulk and general cargo, including regional exports such as palm oil, plywood and rubber. To overcome the draft constraint, the new deepwater Kijing Terminal was built downstream, rated in the hundreds of thousands of TEU and taking over deep-sea traffic. Hinterland links run mainly by road and along the Kapuas itself. For large container vessels, forwarders therefore use Kijing or the main hub at Tanjung Priok in Jakarta.
