A new deep-water dock rated at around 50 million tonnes a year, with two shiploaders and conveyor lines, defines the Pointe-Noire sector of the Port of Sept-Îles in Quebec. Sept-Îles bay, more than 80 metres deep at its entrance, lets the largest Capesize bulk carriers call year-round. Iron ore from the Labrador Trough is the main cargo, shipped by operators including the Iron Ore Company of Canada and Wabush Mines. Aluminium adds a second pillar: Aluminerie Alouette imports alumina and petroleum coke and exports aluminium through the area. Container and general-cargo line traffic plays virtually no role here. Rail and road tie in the inland mines; for container cargo, Montreal is Quebec's reference port.
