Pointe-à-Pierre is an oil port rather than a general-cargo port: it grew up around Trinidad's only refinery, north of San Fernando, long run by Petrotrin. Rated at about 175,000 barrels a day, the refinery stopped processing in 2018 and has since been held in preservation under the Guaracara Refining subsidiary. The port is an open roadstead with jetties for crude and product tankers and channel depths around 12.5 metres. No container or breakbulk line service operates here; the berths handle liquid petroleum only. Until the refinery restarts, throughput stays limited. For containers and general cargo, Point Lisas and Port of Spain are the country's relevant ports.
