Australia's Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station is the reason Point Murat exists as a port: its tanker berth in Exmouth Gulf lands roughly 8 million litres of diesel a year for the facility. The wharf accepts vessels of up to about 170 m length and 10 m draught but offers no container, breakbulk or liner services. For general forwarding cargo the site has little commercial relevance, and the adjacent Navy Pier is better known as a diving site than a freight quay. Regional bulk and container traffic is handled through Dampier and Port Hedland to the north and Fremantle to the south.
