Seven terminals across 230 hectares make Ploče far more than the "very small" label suggests: it is Croatia's second-busiest cargo port and the principal maritime outlet for Bosnia and Herzegovina. The port handled around 3.96 million tonnes in 2024 (down 17%), having previously reached some 5.5 million tonnes, and includes a container terminal alongside dedicated dry-bulk facilities for ores, coal and grain. Around 95% of inbound containers are in transit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, most arriving from the Far East. Sitting on branch Vc of the pan-European corridor, it offers direct rail links to Sarajevo and Mostar and onward to Budapest, backed by strong road connections. Cargo profiles are dominated by bulk commodities and Bosnian industrial flows, plus transit to Hungary and Serbia. Operator Luka Ploče manages the estate, with concession investment aimed at lifting throughput toward double-digit million tonnes. For denser container line networks, Rijeka remains the stronger option, while Bar in Montenegro can serve selected southern routings.
