Unlike a commercial harbour open to any carrier, Pituffik (GL THU) exists to supply a single customer: the US Pituffik Space Base, formerly Thule Air Base, on Baffin Bay. Billed as the world's northernmost deep-water port, it is reachable by sea only during a roughly six-week ice-free window, usually from late June to mid-August. The annual Pacer Goose sealift, run with the Military Sealift Command, lands a year's worth of fuel, construction materials, machinery and provisions in a single vessel call; airlift covers the rest of the year. A berth depth of about 9 m allows large supply ships to discharge, but access and use are under military control. The port is not available to civilian forwarders – commercial Greenland cargo moves on Royal Arctic Line services hubbed at Nuuk and Aasiaat. Supplying base personnel or on-site projects runs through the relevant defence and logistics channels, not an open port operation.
