Around 1.8 million tonnes of cargo pass through Piteå each year, almost all of it tied to the forest industry. The port, some twelve kilometres southeast of the town on the Gulf of Bothnia, mainly exports kraftliner and paper pulp to Germany, the Netherlands and England, while pulpwood and wood chip arrive chiefly from the Baltic states. Roughly 640 metres of quay are served by multi-purpose cranes that handle forest products, dry bulk, project cargo and occasional containers. Icebreakers keep the channel open through the winter, allowing year-round operation. Piteå is not a scheduled container port; shippers needing regular box services are better served by Gävle or Gothenburg. Road and rail links operated by Shorelink connect the quay to the sawmills and pulp plants of northern Sweden.
