With capacity for roughly 1.35 million TEU of containers, 4 million tonnes of dry bulk, 2 million tonnes of liquid bulk and 250,000 vehicles a year, Pipavav Bandar ranks among the significant multi-commodity ports on India's west coast. Operated by APM Terminals as Gujarat Pipavav Port, it was the country's first privately run port and sits on the Saurashtra coast on the Arabian Sea. The all-weather, deep-draught harbour handles four cargo streams under one operation — container, dry bulk, liquid bulk and roll-on/roll-off. Its bulk berths take coal, cement, clinker, fertilisers, steel, iron ore, agricultural products, salt and soda ash, while international container lines call at the box terminals. Channel and quay depths of about 14 to 14.5 m suit larger vessels. Crucially for inland reach, the port has its own rail link tying Pipavav into the network toward northern India and the Delhi region, moving containers inland by block and double-stack trains, complemented by road links into industrial Gujarat. A current expansion programme aims to raise container capacity toward 2.15 million TEU and RoRo capacity to 500,000 vehicles, and to add a new liquid and LPG jetty. For containerised cargo in north-west India, the main alternatives are Mundra and Nhava Sheva (JNPT), with Deendayal (Kandla) a further option for bulk.
