Six quays totalling about a kilometre and a fairway deepened to roughly 11 m equip Pietarsaari — Jakobstad in Swedish — as a specialised forest-products port on Finland's west coast handling around 1.3 million tonnes a year. The terminal, run largely by Euroports, is dominated by sawn timber, pulp, paper, cement and lye. Weekly ro-ro and lo-lo services, including Wallenius SOL, give exporters fast access to mainland Europe. The adjacent Alholmen industrial park, home to a pulp and paper mill, feeds cargo straight onto the quay, and the port has recently upgraded to take long and heavy project cargo. This is not an international container gateway, so deep-sea boxes are handled elsewhere, while road and rail link the harbour to the Finnish interior. Shippers needing containers or mixed cargo can use Rauma to the south, while nearby Kokkola handles heavier dry-bulk and transit flows.
