Unlike the commercial terminals nearby, Ream (Phsar Ream) is a military facility — the Royal Cambodian Navy's base on the Gulf of Thailand, just southeast of Sihanoukville. Since 2022 it has been expanded with Chinese funding, gaining a 300 m deep-water pier and a dry dock, but the work serves naval rather than civilian trade. The base has no container or general-cargo liner services, and its approaches were long considered too shallow for large vessels. Freight bound for southern Cambodia moves instead through the deep-water port of Sihanoukville, about 30 km away, or the river port of Phnom Penh.
