Once a busy lumber and manufacturing harbour in the late 1800s, Petoskey has reinvented itself as a recreational waterfront on Lake Michigan's Little Traverse Bay. Today its breakwater basin holds a 144-slip municipal marina and operates as a Harbor of Refuge for pleasure craft rather than commercial ships. With a cargo pier depth of only about 1.8 m, the harbour cannot support container, bulk or general-cargo handling of any commercial scale. Freight shippers in northern Michigan rely instead on facilities such as the cement loading at Charlevoix or larger Great Lakes ports like Muskegon and Green Bay.
