Over four million barrels of storage, four docks on the Arthur Kill and pipeline, rail and truck connections define Perth Amboy (US PAY) as a liquid petroleum terminal rather than a general cargo port. Operated by Buckeye on the site of a former asphalt refinery, the facility sits between the Raritan River and Raritan Bay within the Port of New York and New Jersey. It handles petroleum products and asphalt; containers and conventional breakbulk are not part of its trade. Dense northern New Jersey road and rail networks give the terminal excellent inland reach. Shippers moving containers in the New York region work through Port Newark–Elizabeth, with neighbouring liquid-bulk terminals at Linden and Bayonne rounding out the area. For tanker and liquid-bulk parcels Perth Amboy is purpose-built, but it is not a multipurpose gateway.
