At the head of Manzanillo Bay, on the eastern side of the Massacre River mouth and a short distance from the Haitian border, Pepillo Salcedo handles the Dominican Republic's banana trade. The port was built in the 1950s by the Grenada Fruit Company and still sees roughly 50 vessels a year, mostly lifting refrigerated containers of fresh fruit. Beyond reefers it can take general cargo plus cement, clinker and coal in bulk, across about 228 metres of quay. It is the closest Dominican port to the United States, which favours short-transit reefer exports. Hinterland links run by road through the country's northwest agricultural zone. For mainstream containerised trade and global liner connections, Caucedo near Santo Domingo remains the principal gateway, with a funded expansion planned to lift Manzanillo's throughput.
