Some 100 miles west of Juneau and 90 miles north of Sitka, Pelican is a remote fishing community on Lisianski Inlet, on the northwest coast of Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska. Commercial fishing is its mainstay: the Pelican Seafoods plant and the city's ice machines supply the fleet with flake ice, continuing a cold-storage tradition that dates to the settlement's founding in 1938. The municipal boat harbour offers about 98 berths for commercial and transient vessels. There is no road link to any hinterland — access is by floatplane or by the Alaska Marine Highway ferry, which calls twice monthly in summer and once a month in winter. Pelican has no container, customs or general-cargo facilities. Forwarders with commercial shipments use Sitka or Juneau as the nearest full-service ports.
