Patras is first and foremost Greece's truck ferry to Italy rather than a container port. Set on the Gulf of Patras in the north-western Peloponnese, its South (New) Port has concentrated all Italy services since 2011, operated by Superfast, ANEK, Blue Star and Grimaldi and carrying passengers alongside accompanied and unaccompanied trailers. Sailings reach Ancona in under 25 hours, Bari in about 17.5 hours and Venice in 30 to 36 hours. Since October 2024 Grimaldi has also called at Patras on its Trieste–Ambarli ro-ro route, worked by the hybrid sister vessels Eco Mediterranea and Eco Malta with capacity for over 500 trailers each; Gemlik (Gemport) was added as a further Turkish call in mid-December 2024. For forwarders this makes Patras a roll-on/roll-off land bridge for road freight into western and central Europe and, increasingly, Turkey. The port's master plan has been approved by presidential decree, and in 2026 the Patras Port Authority (OLPA) signed a memorandum with Egyptian operator Pan Marine to open cargo flows toward the eastern Mediterranean. Ferry lines also serve Ionian islands such as Kefalonia and Ithaca; containerised cargo moves through Piraeus or Thessaloniki, while Igoumenitsa is the nearest alternative ferry gateway.
