Alcoa, through its subsidiary Suralco, opened an aluminium smelter at Paranam in 1965, powered by the Afobaka hydroelectric dam. The works port, some 30 km up the Suriname River, handled bauxite and alumina for decades. With the smelter shut down around 2000 and the refinery closed in 2015, the site lost its industrial base, and cargo activity has since been much reduced, limited to residual use and diversification projects. The pier offers a good depth of about 12.5 m and can take larger vessels, but no regular container or liner services operate here. For forwarders, Paranam (SR PRM) is today a specialised industrial location with limited, project-driven demand. General imports and exports run through the main port of Paramaribo (Nieuwe Haven, roughly 30 km north), while Nieuw Nickerie serves bulk needs in the west of the country.
