Soybeans, soymeal, corn, fertilisers and sugar move in one direction and refrigerated meat containers in the other at Paranagua, in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná. In 2025 the Portos do Paraná system, of which Paranagua is by far the larger half, set a record of 73.5 million tonnes and posted the fastest growth of any Brazilian port authority; soybean exports reached about 14.6 million tonnes, up 11 percent, while corn leapt from 1.07 to 5.09 million tonnes, a rise of 375 percent. Alongside the agribulk berths sits TCP (Terminal de Contêineres de Paranaguá), majority-owned by China Merchants Port, which passed 1.6 million TEU and 11.5 million tonnes in 2025 — first in Brazil's south and third nationally. Reefer traffic is its speciality: more than 30 percent of Brazil's beef exports and over 40 percent of its chicken exports load here. A deepened approach admits vessels up to 368 metres, and in December 2025 a single ship loaded 77,000 tonnes of corn. The hinterland covers the farming regions of Paraná, Mato Grosso and neighbouring states by road and rail, with customs handled by Receita Federal. Santos to the north and São Francisco do Sul and Itajaí/Navegantes to the south are the practical alternatives.
