A relatively shallow fairway of about 3.4 metres and an upstream position on the river Ems define Papenburg, a port in Lower Saxony best known as the home of the Meyer Werft shipyard, founded in 1795 and famous for building large cruise ships. Those newbuildings reach the North Sea only via a demanding 36-kilometre passage down the Ems to the Dollart. The port does not handle container liner traffic; its throughput is soil and bio-substrates, agricultural goods, iron and steel, building materials, timber, ship components and project cargo. Road, rail and inland-waterway links connect Papenburg to the north-west German hinterland. The Ems draft limit noticeably restricts the size of cargo vessels that can be worked here. For containers and larger ocean vessels, forwarders use the nearby deep-water ports of Emden, Leer or Bremerhaven, leaving Papenburg suited to breakbulk, heavy-lift and project shipments with a regional focus.
