Forest products are the backbone of Port Panama City, a deep-water port on St. Andrew Bay in the Florida Panhandle, on the Gulf of Mexico. It moves more than 2 million tonnes a year — linerboard, wood pellets, wood pulp and lumber, alongside copper, steel, stone and molasses — as a blend of breakbulk, bulk and containers. The East Terminal, opened in 2020, doubled the authority's capacity for breakbulk forest-products cargo; in FY 2022 alone the port handled over 450,000 tonnes of forest products and lumber. Rail (the Bay Line Railroad) and road (US 231, I-10) connect it to the US Southeast. A channel depth of about 9.4 m suits handysize and smaller vessels, while deep-sea liner services still route through the larger Gulf gateways. For high container volumes or Panamax traffic, Mobile or Tampa are the obvious alternatives.
