State-owned CVG Ferrominera Orinoco runs Palua as an iron-ore export terminal on the Orinoco River. Lying roughly 290 km upstream near Ciudad Guayana in Bolívar State, it ships ore fines, pellets, hot-briquetted iron and steel coils. Because the river limits draught, Panamax and Handymax shuttle vessels carry the cargo to an offshore transfer station moored off the Orinoco mouth. The quay reaches around 12.5 m and is geared to dry bulk rather than container traffic. Road and rail tie the terminal to the steelworks and mines of its hinterland. For containers or breakbulk, the neighbouring facilities at Puerto Ordaz and the Matanzas steel terminals are better suited.
