Grandi Navi Veloci and other lines run year-round RoRo services linking Palermo with Genoa and Civitavecchia, framing a port that is above all a ferry, RoRo and cruise hub. Together with Termini Imerese it handles around 7 million tonnes of cargo and some 2.54 million passengers a year, including roughly 940,000 cruise guests in 2023. Containers reach Sicily mainly as feeder cargo via Gioia Tauro rather than through major line services at Palermo itself. In the northeast of the port, Fincantieri operates one of the Mediterranean's largest shipbuilding and ship-repair complexes, specialising in passenger and offshore vessels. The Sicilian hinterland is served by road and rail. For pure container line traffic, the Gioia Tauro transhipment hub on the mainland is the relevant alternative.
