Scrap metal, oil products, timber, loose peat and RoRo traffic make up the working cargo of Paldiski North Harbour, the northern of Paldiski's two harbours, about 45 km west of Tallinn on the Gulf of Finland. Operated by the Port of Tallinn, it moves roughly 850,000 tonnes of cargo and handles some 600 vessels a year, with general and RoRo cargo leading the imports. Quay depths of around 12 m suit conventional freighters and ro-pax units. Estonian road and rail tie the port to Tallinn and the wider hinterland, with short runs to the capital. The surrounding Paldiski area is also developing facilities for Baltic offshore-wind logistics. For container liner services, however, Muuga — the Port of Tallinn's main cargo harbour — remains the first choice.
