Oxelösund (UN/LOCODE SE OXE) on Sweden's eastern Baltic coast is deep in industrial transition: SSAB's integrated steelworks — the only one in Sweden — is investing SEK 6.2 billion in an electric arc furnace targeting Q2 2027 after appeals over the power-line permit were withdrawn and Vattenfall resumed construction in June 2026. A new steel powder facility was announced in June 2026 with a capacity of 350 tonnes per year, construction starting in 2026 and commercial production from Q1 2028. The port itself is investing around SEK 700 million in quay lengthening, a new crane, dredging, yard space and a rail marshalling yard. In current operations, around 7.6 million tonnes pass through annually — iron ore, steel plate (around 90% exported to Europe) and forest products. With 16.5 m depth and a short approach, this ice-free port is one of the few Baltic terminals capable of handling large bulk carriers; scheduled container services route through Gävle or Stockholm Norvik.
