Timber and fish are the staple cargoes of Owase Ko, a coastal and fishing port on the Pacific (Kumano-nada) shore of the Kii Peninsula in Mie Prefecture, which also handles general cargo, dry bulk and bunkers. Behind roughly 1,000 metres of breakwater, its public wharves carry about 4.5 metres of water and mainly serve fishing and coastal vessels of under 1,000 DWT. A separate offshore oil berth, built for the former Owase-Mita power station, could take tankers of up to around 100,000 DWT. The port runs no container line services and no international customs gateway of its own, so its value lies in regional coastal and industrial traffic. For containerised and intercontinental freight, Nagoya is the governing gateway, while Yokkaichi concentrates the region's petrochemical trade.
