A breakwater, a small-boat harbour and a single city dock make up the waterfront of Ouzinkie, an Alutiiq village of roughly 110 people on Spruce Island, about 14 nautical miles northwest of Kodiak, Alaska. Supplies arrive by seasonal Alaska Marine Highway ferry and by barge from Seattle, Anchorage and Kodiak; there is no container line service, no customs clearance and no heavy-lift capability. With no road or rail link to the mainland, hinterland distribution depends on sea and air only. For commercial freight the relevant gateway is the Port of Kodiak.
