Sawn timber, pulp and paper, chemicals and minerals fill most of the quays at Oulu (FI OUL), northern Finland's largest general cargo port on the Bothnian Bay, which moved around 3 million tonnes and 50,715 TEU in 2025. Container volumes rose 31% year on year and sawn timber exports reached a record. The port at the mouth of the Oulujoki river splits into three basins: Oritkari for containers and forest-industry cargo with two 50-tonne cranes, Nuottasaari for forest-industry raw materials, and Vihreäsaari for oil and dry bulk. Roughly 500 vessels call each year, carrying dry and liquid bulk, forest products, containers, RoRo and breakbulk. Boxes move mainly on feeder services connecting through southern Finnish ports, and icebreaker support keeps the port working through the winter freeze. Finland sits inside the EU single market, so intra-EU consignments clear without customs duty while third-country goods are declared to Finnish Customs (Tulli). Road and rail reach the northern Finnish and Lapland hinterland; Kemi, HaminaKotka or Helsinki are practical alternatives for larger container volumes.
