Timber, paper products, chemicals and minerals make up much of the cargo at Oulu, northern Finland's largest general port on the Bothnian Bay. Set at the mouth of the Oulujoki river, the port is organised into three harbours — Oritkari, Nuottasaari and Vihreäsaari. It handles roughly 3 million tonnes a year across about 500 vessel calls, covering dry and liquid bulk, forest products, containers, RoRo and breakbulk. Oritkari focuses on container and forest-industry cargo with two 50-tonne cranes, while Nuottasaari serves forest-industry raw materials. Container traffic is largely feeder-based, connecting through southern Finnish ports. Icebreaker assistance keeps the port open year-round. Road and rail reach the northern Finnish hinterland; for larger container volumes, Helsinki or HaminaKotka are practical alternatives.
