A 15-kilometre ship canal with locks, the Canal de Caen à la Mer, ties Ouistreham on the English Channel to the commercial basins of Caen upstream. Ouistreham itself is the seaward terminal of the Caen-Ouistreham port: it handles Brittany Ferries' roll-on/roll-off traffic to Portsmouth, with three daily rotations and a crossing of about six hours that carries accompanied and unaccompanied HGV freight.
