Some 250 vessels and around 540,000 tonnes of cargo pass through Otranto each year, Italy's easternmost harbour where the Adriatic meets the Ionian Sea. Exports centre on olive oil, while imports include foodstuffs, pumice, phosphates and fertilizers, alongside cement products carried by coastal freighters across the Adriatic. There is no container liner service; the port is a sheltered cove behind the San Nicola breakwater that also offers roughly 390 yacht berths. Apulia's hinterland is reachable by road and rail, but handling capacity stays limited to modest breakbulk and bulk volumes. A ferry link to Greece and Albania operated until 1999, and the bay today is mainly a port of call for cruising yachts. For containerised cargo, RoRo or larger volumes, Brindisi, Bari and the industrial port of Taranto are the relevant alternatives.
