Where Tomakomai handles Hokkaido's container volumes, Otaru (UN/LOCODE JP OTR) earns its living mainly from ferries and bulk. Shin Nihonkai Ferry links the natural harbour on the Sea of Japan with Maizuru and Niigata on Honshu, running ships such as the Kiso, Ishikari and Kitakami that carry trucks, trailers and passengers across the strait. The port also moves dry and liquid bulk – coal, grain, cement and petroleum products – and receives cruise ships, with berths able to take vessels of up to 140,000 tons. Developed from the late 19th century to open up Hokkaido, Otaru once shipped coal and seafood above all. Container traffic exists but is limited and not a major liner hub. For containerised cargo to the island, Tomakomai on the Pacific coast is the far larger and better-connected gateway.
