The export economy of New Zealand's lower South Island runs largely through Port Chalmers, the deep-water gateway operated by Port Otago. Reefer cargo dominates the trade — chilled meat and dairy and other temperature-controlled produce — alongside containers and export logs from a dedicated 4.6-hectare log yard. The 17.7-hectare container terminal can store more than 6,400 boxes including up to 1,450 reefer points, and as one of the country's two deepest container ports it handles the largest ships in the New Zealand trade. Two ship-to-shore cranes allow two vessels to be worked at once, while wharf-side cold stores in Dunedin hold up to 10,500 tonnes of chilled product. Road and rail links connect the port to Dunedin and the farming hinterland of Otago. For the wider South Island, Lyttelton (Christchurch) and Bluff are the main alternative ports.
