Sweden's forest economy shapes Örnsköldsvik far more than container trade does. The port on the Gulf of Bothnia is tied to the Domsjö Fabriker biorefinery, which converts timber into specialty cellulose, lignin and bio-ethanol, so forest products, pulp and bulk and liquid chemicals make up most of the throughput. Pulpwood increasingly reaches the site by rail, with Green Cargo and Domsjö Fiber shifting over 5,000 tonnes a week from road to rail. The approach channel is deep at about 12.5 m, but the working cargo quays are shallower at roughly 3.4 m and geared to local industry. Ice in the northern Baltic can call for icebreaker assistance in winter. For mill-linked forest and chemical flows Örnsköldsvik is a specialised industrial port, while Sundsvall, Gävle and Umeå are the natural alternatives for container services.
