Producing roughly a quarter of the world's hazelnuts, the province of Ordu gives its Black Sea port a distinctly agricultural character. Operated by Çakıroğlu Ordu Liman İşletmesi, the harbour mainly handles hazelnuts, timber and general breakbulk, alongside a fishing fleet, rather than scheduled container lines. It sits at the mouth of the Melet River, sheltered by the Boztepe hill, and has gradually replaced the town's former open roadstead. With no rail link, the mountainous hinterland is served by road along the Black Sea coastal highway. For container traffic or larger liner cargo, forwarders rely on Samsun or Trabzon. Ordu is therefore best suited to regional agricultural and breakbulk shipments.
