Second only to Algiers among Algeria's ports, Oran sits on the western Mediterranean coast about 400 km west of the capital (UN/LOCODE DZ ORN). It serves western Algeria with a broad cargo mix: general cargo, containers, grain, coal, liquid petroleum products and ro-ro and passenger traffic. Seven basins with 37 berths and some 3.5 km of quay handled about 11.3 million tonnes in 2024, with container throughput around 295,000 TEU. The port is operated by Enterprise Portuaire d'Oran (EPO). Three new quay cranes arrived in 2024, and a Phase 2 terminal extension targets up to 1.2 million TEU a year and vessels of 4,000–6,000 TEU. The hinterland—Oran, Sidi Bel Abbès, Tlemcen and Mascara—is linked by road and rail. Crude oil and gas exports, by contrast, move through nearby Arzew rather than Oran itself. For larger box volumes or capacity, Algiers, Bejaia or the deepwater port of Djen Djen are alternatives.
