APM Terminals, INTELS and ICTSI are among the operators that have shaped Onne, a port complex on the Bonny River estuary in Nigeria's Rivers State and one of the largest oil-and-gas free zones in the world. The complex is built around two main terminals — the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) and the Federal Lighter Terminal (FLT) — host to eight major oil companies and more than 220 service firms. Its West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) offers about 570 metres of quay, up to 11.3 metres of draft, 600 reefer points and roughly 385,000 TEU of annual capacity after a 2024 upgrade. Cargo ranges from containers and project and heavy-lift pieces to drilling and production equipment, breakbulk and bulk for the energy sector. Free-zone status gives importers and exporters duty-relieved storage and clearance, making Onne the preferred logistics base for oil-and-gas materials in the region. The port accounts for a substantial share of Nigeria's export cargo, complementing the container gateways at Lagos. Since 2024 Hapag-Lloyd has called WACT with a weekly liner service, linking eastern Nigeria directly to global routes. Hinterland access runs mainly by road toward Port Harcourt, with rail playing a minor role. For pure container-line services, alternatives include the Lagos terminals at Apapa, Tin Can and Lekki, as well as WACT itself.
