Coal, petroleum, dry bulk, LPG, breakbulk and containers all pass across the quays of Onahama Ko (JP ONA), the multipurpose port south of Iwaki in Fukushima Prefecture. The harbour traces its commercial life back to 1747, when rice levies were shipped to Edo, and grew into a coal-export base during the Meiji era. Today berths handle vessels of up to about 120,000 DWT, with total annual throughput around 13.45 million tonnes. Container business is modest – roughly 40,000 TEU capacity at the Ohtsurugi Pier, with a quay of about 185 metres – and largely regional in scope. Road links and the Fukushima Rinkai Railway connect the port to surrounding industrial areas. Shippers needing high-frequency container services typically route via Tokyo or Yokohama.
