Coho salmon, Pacific saury and locally farmed oysters are the mainstay of Onagawa, a naturally deep fishing harbour on the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture. The town processes and distributes these catches, supported by a fish market and refrigerated storage that keep perishable seafood fresh. Rebuilt almost entirely after the 2011 tsunami that devastated the community, the port also handles limited volumes of general and bulk cargo. Container-line services and international general-cargo traffic, however, are not part of its profile. Such consignments are better routed through nearby Ishinomaki or the container port of Sendai-Shiogama. For temperature-controlled seafood exports, though, Onagawa remains a meaningful regional gateway.
