Few Norwegian ports are as tightly bound to a single industry as Odda, a smelter town at the head of the Sørfjord arm of the Hardangerfjord. Boliden's zinc smelter, in operation since the 1920s and expanding from about 200,000 to 350,000 tonnes of zinc a year, anchors the cargo base: exports of zinc, chemicals, aluminium and fluoride, against imports of coal, coke, ores, phosphates and limestone. Zinc concentrate arrives from mines including Garpenberg in Sweden and Tara in Ireland. Quays offer depths around 14 m and are being upgraded as part of the plant expansion, suiting bulk and chemical vessels rather than scheduled container or liner traffic. The mountainous hinterland is served chiefly by road, roughly three hours from Bergen. Forwarders needing containers or general sea freight should look to Bergen, while some aluminium-related flows also use Husnes.
