Noshiro Ko in Akita Prefecture on the Sea of Japan is less a general cargo port than an energy port, and is classed by Japan as a Major Port. It was built primarily to supply coal to the adjacent Noshiro thermal power station (operating since 1993); a multipurpose international terminal followed in 2001, and in 2006 it was designated a recycling port for scrap-metal export. Today Noshiro is also a key base port for Japanese offshore wind, serving both construction and the operation and maintenance of the wind farms off Akita and Noshiro. Containers tend to route via nearby Akita, while Noshiro handles energy, dry-bulk and project cargo such as turbine components. Inland links run through the road and rail network of the Tōhoku region.
