About 3.5 million TEU crossed the docks of The Port of Virginia in fiscal 2024, up 2 percent and the second-best year on record for the gateway listed here as Norfolk (UN/LOCODE US ORF). A newly completed 55-foot channel—the deepest commercial shipping channel on the US East Coast, finished in early 2026—lets the port handle fully laden ultra-large container vessels and berth four of them at once. Its principal box facilities are Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) and the semi-automated Virginia International Gateway (VIG), supported by Portsmouth Marine Terminal and rail/barge terminals at Newport News and Richmond. A $650 million renovation of NIT's North Berth is under way, due for completion by 2027; once finished it will lift the port's capacity to about 5.8 million TEU a year. Cargo skews toward consumer goods, reefer loads, machinery and agricultural exports rather than oil or dry bulk. Rail is a particular strength: Heartland Corridor double-stack trains link Chicago and the Midwest, with rail capacity expanded to 2 million TEU and on-dock service from Norfolk Southern and CSX. As a full US entry port, Virginia handles all import and export customs procedures. For extra capacity or different rotations, New York/New Jersey, Baltimore and Charleston are alternatives.
