Fuel, gravel, vehicles and village freight — not containers — define the cargo profile of Nome, the maritime resupply point for more than 60 communities across western and northern Alaska. Vessels and landing craft load at sheet-pile docks and barge ramps in the inner harbour, from where goods are redistributed to roadless coastal villages. Between 2012 and 2021 the port averaged roughly 31,000 tons of general cargo, 59,000 tons of sand and gravel and 9.5 million gallons of refined petroleum each year. A shallow inner-harbour depth of about 1.8 metres forces larger ships to lighter offshore. A USD 600 million expansion, breaking ground in 2026 and due in 2029, will dredge a new basin to around 12 metres and make Nome the first U.S. Arctic deepwater port. For containerised cargo and formal customs clearance, Anchorage remains the practical gateway.
