# Noank (US NK3)

**UN/LOCODE:** US NK3

**Water Body:** North Atlantic Ocean

**Harbor Type:** Coastal (Natural)
**GPS:** 41.3167, -71.9833

Robert Palmer's shipyard once made Noank one of the largest wooden-shipbuilding centres in the United States, and the village at the mouth of the Mystic River in Groton, Connecticut, gave its name to the "Noank smack" fishing sailboat. Today the waterfront is given over to marinas, recreational craft and lobstering rather than commercial freight. With water depths of only about 1.8 m and no customs presence, Noank handles no container or general-cargo traffic. Shippers in the area use the State Pier at New London (US NLO) or the gateway complex of New York/New Jersey.
