The UN/LOCODE YE NIS marks Nishtun, the main seaport of Yemen's eastern Al-Mahrah governorate and a key supply gate for a whole border region on the Arabian Sea. Sheltered by two breakwaters and served by a single jetty, the natural harbour moves around 25,000 t of cargo a year, mostly imports of consumer goods and basic necessities for the eastern provinces, and also functions as an important regional fishing port. Dimensions are tightly limited: vessels are accepted up to about 90 m length at 5.5 m draught and roughly 4,000 DWT, ruling out container or large-ship traffic. Saudi Arabia took control of the port from late 2017 and pursues strategic interests there, including direct Arabian Sea access. For containers and larger volumes into the region, forwarders rely chiefly on nearby Salalah in Oman, complemented by the Yemeni ports of Mukalla and Aden.
