The port lies on the left bank of the Amur River, about 80 km from the open water of the river's liman on the Tatar Strait in Russia's Far East. Navigation is confined to the ice-free summer season of about 5.5 months. Founded in 1850, the town was briefly the Russian Empire's principal Pacific harbour after 1854 before Vladivostok eclipsed it; today fishing, fish processing and ship repair anchor the local economy. Deep-sea container freight in the region routes through Vanino and Vladivostok, while upriver the port feeds Komsomolsk-na-Amure and Khabarovsk.
