Operating since 1969, the Kenai LNG dock at Nikiski (US NIK) was for decades North America's only LNG export terminal, until it was idled in 2018 and later approved for conversion to imports. The port itself sits on the east side of Cook Inlet, about 13 kilometres northwest of Kenai in Alaska, and is purely an energy and industrial facility built around a wharf and three 'T' jetties. It handles crude oil, petroleum products, LNG, liquid ammonia and urea, working roughly 180 vessels and some 8.8 million deadweight tonnes a year. The Nikiski Terminal Wharf, run by Kenai Pipeline Company and Marathon Petroleum, receives North Slope and Cook Inlet crude for a refinery rated at about 68,000 barrels per day producing gasoline, distillates, heavy fuel oil, asphalt and propane, while the southern wharf operated by Agrium/Nutrien ships urea and anhydrous ammonia. A large new liquefaction plant, the Alaska LNG project, is planned at the site. Containers and general cargo for southern Alaska do not move through Nikiski; forwarders use the Port of Alaska at Anchorage.
