Trawlers landing sole and brown shrimp share the Yser estuary with up to roughly 2,000 yachts at Nieuwpoort (BE NIE), the largest pleasure-craft harbour in northern Europe and Belgium's only natural coastal harbour. The fishing port hosts about 35 vessels and runs its own daily fish auction, supplying plaice, sole and shrimp to regional markets. Commercial freight is modest and essentially limited to sand and gravel, handled at a roughly 1,200 m quay with only about 2.5 m of draught; there is no container or general-cargo liner service. Forwarders with boxes or larger breakbulk volumes rely on nearby Zeebrugge and Oostende.
