Hake, monkfish, turbot, pollock, crab and scallops — these are the cargoes that define Newlyn, England's largest fishing port and, by value of landings (£37.9m in 2022), the fourth largest in the UK. Set on Mount's Bay in south-west Cornwall beside Penzance, the harbour hosts beam trawlers, stern trawlers, potters and ring-netters, plus a netting fleet working grounds from south of Ireland deep into the Channel; Scottish scallopers and prawn trawlers use it seasonally too. Around the quays sits a cluster of processors, merchants and gear suppliers that depend on the daily landings. Fresh fish leaves Newlyn chiefly by refrigerated road transport towards mainland markets and onward to the Continent. For commercial sea freight in Cornwall, Falmouth (bulk, bunkering, ship repair) and Plymouth are the nearest practical alternatives.
