The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey oversees Port Newark–Elizabeth (US EWR), the container core of the busiest port complex on the US East Coast. The wider port handled about 8.9 million TEU in 2025, up 2.3 percent, split into roughly 4.5 million TEU of imports against 1.4 million TEU of exports, the latter growing 6.5 percent. On the Newark side, Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) spreads across some 272 acres and now moves more than 1.7 million TEU, with an expansion programme set to add around 1 million TEU of capacity. PNCT has extended its lease with the Port Authority through 2050, while APM Terminals in adjoining Elizabeth runs to 2062; Maher Terminals completes the operator line-up. Dry, reefer and hazardous containers are all worked here for the densely populated US Northeast. ExpressRail double-stack trains, the New Jersey Turnpike and Interstates 78 and 95 carry boxes inland, backed by one of North America's largest warehouse markets. US Customs and Border Protection clears cargo, and importers must file an ISF 10+2 security declaration before loading at origin. The import-heavy trade keeps empty repositioning constant and tightens detention and demurrage windows; for southeastern destinations, Norfolk and Savannah are the usual alternatives.
