Seven berths, rail spurs and covered sheds along the lower Fraser River define the working waterfront at New Westminster, part of greater Vancouver's port system in British Columbia. Forest products dominate the flow — packaged lumber for export alongside imported steel plate, coil, pipe and structural sections — while the neighbouring multipurpose terminal, rebranded DP World Fraser Surrey since the 2020 takeover of Fraser Surrey Docks, handles the area's containers, breakbulk, logs, grain, machinery and project cargo on vessels up to Panamax. With six deep-sea berths, extensive yard space, covered warehousing and integrated road and rail links, it ranks as the largest multipurpose marine terminal on North America's West Coast. In July 2026 DP World, working with Transport Canada and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, removed an in-river training wall dating from 1967; the roughly CAD 9 million project, including CAD 2 million in federal funding, improved marine access and unlocked up to 2 million tonnes of additional annual export capacity, notably for grain and for steel and project cargo. The tidal Fraser channel still limits vessel draft, so large container services route instead through the deep-water terminals on Burrard Inlet and at Roberts Bank (Deltaport). CN and CP rail plus the highway network extend the hinterland deep into the Canadian interior. For full-container moves, the Port of Vancouver and Deltaport are the obvious alternatives.
