Port Taranaki at New Plymouth (LOCODE: NZ NPL) is New Zealand's only deep-water port on the west coast and the country's third-largest port by total trade volume. The port processed more than 3 million tonnes of cargo in 2024/25, specialising in energy commodities: the Newton King Tanker Terminal handles crude oil, methanol, and LPG, with Methanex operating on-site methanol storage. From 2026, Port Taranaki is being developed as the site of a national LNG import terminal: the New Zealand Government shortlisted two proposals in mid-2026, targeting contract signature and commissioning by early 2028 to address declining domestic gas production. No container liner services are available; the nearest general-cargo hubs are Port of Tauranga and Auckland.
